Blizzard's Working on New Dragon Cards, New Hearthstone Content Coming in March?
In the Activision Blizzard Q4 2014 financial report conference call, Blizzard revealed that Hearthstone has reached more than 25 million registered players in January 2015 (it was 20 million in September 2014 after Hearthstone iPad release). Hearthstone together with Destiny, the next generation first person shooter, generated more than $450 million profit for Blizzard in Q4 2014. Though Hearthstone is defined as a casual game, it already proved its huge potential for Blizzard in the feature, either based on the instantly growing player numbers or money making ablity.
In the past 2014, Hearthstone has two major content releases: the Curse of Naxxramas Adventure andGoblins vs. Gnomes, the first expansion. Then what to expect in 2015? Beside the upcoming Android phone and iPhone versions of the game we already knew, Hearthstone's executive producer Hamilton Chu and production director Jason Chayes revealed what they are working on currently in a group interview with some Chinese medias in Hearthstone Golden Series Finals.
Q: For the legendary cards released for GvG, Dr.Boom has been considered the best neutral legendary card. Is Blizzard planning to make changes to this card?
A: Dr.Boom is kinda a new card for Hearthstone. The interesting thing is many players didn't realize how powerful the card is but after a period of exploration, a lot of players found out that it can be played tactically. It obvisouly has something to do with playing time.
Currently, many players are trying to add some certain cards in the deck to counter Dr.Boom. We plan to wait for a couple of weeks to see how it goes. If it is still too strong, we'll consider change this card but for now, we think the game balance is good so we'll wait and see.
Q: GvG added a new race Mech to the game. Will you guys further develop the old races, like "Dragon" and "Pirate"?
A: We've seen a few pirate decks in the tournament and they are a lot of fun. We didn't put much effort to "Dragon" but we'll add some surprising contents in the near future and also make full use of those decks with the special races.
For us, those special race decks may not be very powerful, for example, the murloc deck is built for entertainment but they might not have great performance in the tournaments. Other races are the same.
That is said they are working on something new about the dragon race. Maybe we'll see more dragon cards in the next update. Will the dragon cards added to be more tournament-oriented or just for entertainment like murloc? Well, only time can tell.
In regard to the possible new content release timeline, Blizzard announced the Curse of Naxxramas Adventure at PAX East on April 11th, 2014 and soon we'll have PAX East again from March 6 to March 8 in Boston. So I guess they'll also have something new to present to world-wide Hearthstone players.
